Can Manchester United's New Signings Break City's Grasp on The Title This Season?

It has been a summer to remember for Manchester United fans. The club have been busy in the transfer market following what had been a disappointing end to the 2020/21 campaign with the loss to Villarreal in the Europa League final. The question is, will the new signings close the gap between Manchester United and their city rivals, Manchester City?

Jadon Sancho was the number one target of Manchester United last summer but despite making an offer to Borussia Dortmund, the German club were not willing to sell. That changed this summer and Manchester United were able to purchase the England international for £76.5 million. The winger will add another dimension to the Manchester United attack with his dribbling ability and with Daniel James sold to Leeds United, Sancho should get plenty of game time at Old Trafford. If the forward can replicate what he produced during his time in the Bundesliga, Manchester United fans are in for a treat and he will bring more goals to the team. However, there are slight concerns Sancho will not have the same output in English football.

In terms of quality at the back, they do not come much better than Raphaël Varane and the central defender joined Manchester United from Real Madrid for £36 million. That price looks a bargain as Varane has tremendous experience having won the Champions League and La Liga multiple times during his career in Spain. There is no doubt Varane is a big upgrade on the other central defenders currently in the Manchester United squad and once he has settled in a partnership with Harry Maguire, it should lead to a significant improvement defensively.

However, the biggest transfer news of the summer coming out of Old Trafford was the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. Previously linked with a move to Manchester City, reports suggest Sir Alex Ferguson and Rio Ferdinand called Ronaldo and told him he would be making a huge mistake moving to the Etihad Stadium and it was a gamble that would not pay off. Interestingly, some online casinos give you the opportunity to gamble in difference ways, including live betting, slots betting, and bet on phone.

Manchester United fans will be hoping the gamble to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford at the age of 36 will pay dividends in their pursuit of Manchester City. The Portuguese international is not the player he was when the left the club but his presence alone could raise the bar and drag Manchester United to another level this season.

Manchester City failed to get a world class striker through the door and will have to rely on Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus for that position this season. However, they managed in the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final. Pep Guardiola has a new addition in Jack Grealish, who will bring something different to the midfield, so Manchester City are certainly not any weaker and remain the team to beat.

Manchester United finished 12 points behind Manchester City last season and that gap should be closer come the end of the 2021/22 campaign. Varane could be the player who makes the biggest impact on the pitch but Manchester City have the superior coach and that could be the difference.
