Who Are the Favourites for This Year’s Premier League Golden Boot?

This year’s Premier League golden boot race is shaping up to be one of the hottest ever, with at least three teams in the running for the league title and plenty more chasing European qualification there will be no lack of motivation for the league’s most ambitious forwards. The top scorers from the last six seasons are still plying their trade in England and showing no signs of slowing down, and there are plenty of others in with a chance, so the race is sure to be tight.

There are a number of possible winners and oddschecker, whose free no deposit bets can be used on this and plenty of other markets, agree that this will be one of the most exciting golden boot races yet, with fluctuating odds representing this. So, lets assess some of this season's most likely candidates.

Mohamed Salah

The man many believe to be the best player in the world right now has started the season in typical fashion, reaching double figures quicker than anyone else in the league this year. Salah has consistently scored goals as part of Liverpool’s deadly front three since his arrival in England, winning the golden boot in 2017/18 and retaining it the following year, when it was shared with his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The fact that him not winning it in the last two years was surprising to some is a testament to his quality, and he wasn’t far off in either year, finishing one goal behind last year’s winner Harry Kane and four goals behind Jamie Vardy the year before that. With Liverpool looking strong again after last year's dip, expect him to be up there this season.

Jamie Vardy

Leicester’s evergreen veteran frontman loves scoring goals almost as much as he loves winding up opposition fans, sometimes achieving both at the same time. By now, his fairy-tale rise from non-league football has been told millions of times, and his unfathomable Premier League win with Leicester will no doubt be the final scene of the Hollywood movie. However, one suspects that his 2019/20 golden boot win will be just as great a source of personal pride for the centre forward. Last seasons total of 15 was somewhat disappointing by his standards and led many to suggest that he may finally be slowing down. Most fans know better than to count him out though, he’s still playing with the same fire in his belly and is already well on course to smash last year’s total.

Michail Antonio

This season’s “wildcard” pick is looking less like a wildcard by the week. Having previously played as an attacking midfielder, winger and wingback, Antonio has become one of the leagues most feared centre forwards. While his physical attributes are extremely impressive, the finesse Antonio has added to his game in recent seasons has enabled him to start this season in fine form, scoring almost at will for both West Ham and Jamaica. It seems like the only thing that can stop the Hammers No.9 right now is a recurrence of the hamstring problems that have plagued him for the last few seasons. If he can stay fit, no one would bet against him breaking the 20-goal barrier.

Harry Kane

It seems ridiculous to think that a 28-year-old striker with Harry Kane’s goal record would ever be doubted by fans and pundits alike, but this is the world of modern football. Although he hasn’t scored many so far this season, last years golden boot winner is a notoriously slow starter. His back-to-back hattricks in England’s recent World Cup qualifiers, albeit against San Marino and Albania, suggest that Kane is getting warmed up. Antonio Conte’s recent appointment at Spurs should fire him up too, so it should shock no one if he shoots up the goalscoring charts in the coming months.

Romelu Lukaku

After 3 goals in his first 3 games, the goals dried up for Lukaku before he was sidelined with injury. A keen student of the game, the Belgian front man will no doubt have used his time out to study the movements of the league’s defenders, so don’t be surprised if he comes back energised and with some new tricks up his sleeve. Last season’s phenomenal goalscoring in leading Inter Milan to the Serie A title has taken his confidence to a new level, so he should hit the ground running upon his return to action.
